Werner Melter

Werner Melter (* 28 March 1924 in Feldkirch; † 24 May 2007 in Amsterdam) was an Austrian politician (FPÖ) and secretary of the Vorarlberg War Victims Association. He was a Member of the Austrian National Council from 1966 to 1979 and a Member of the Vorarlberg Parliament from 1959 to 1966.

Education and profession

Werner Melter was born on 28 March 1924 as the son of Oskar and Anna Melter in Feldkirch-Tosters. After attending elementary school with the school brothers in Feldkirch, Melter graduated from the humanistic grammar school in Feldkirch and passed the war matriculation examination there in 1942. Immediately afterwards he was called up for military service in the German Wehrmacht and became a Soviet prisoner of war as early as November 1942, from which he was released after the end of the war in October 1945. After his release from captivity and his return home to Vorarlberg, Werner Melter spent the time until the spring of 1946 mainly treating the sick in the retreat house in Tisis and in the Valduna sanatorium in Rankweil. From 1 May 1946 he was professionally active as secretary of the Vorarlberg War Victims’ Association, to whose founding committee he also belonged since 3 January 1946.

Political career

Melter represented the Vorarlberg Freedom Party from 1959 to 1966 as a member of parliament for the electoral district of Bregenz in the Vorarlberg state parliament and from 1960 was a substitute member or member of the Bregenz city council. In addition, he served as a member of the Family Policy Advisory Council in the Federal Chancellery and was an employee representative in the General Meeting of the Employees’ Pension Insurance Institution. Between 30 March 1966 and 4 June 1979 Werner Melter was a member of the National Council for the FPÖ. He died of heart failure on 24 May 2007 while on holiday in the Dutch capital Amsterdam.[1]
