Werner Karg

Werner Karg (* 16 March 1950 in Bregenz) is a former Austrian politician (FPÖ), handball player and real estate agent. He was a member of the Vorarlberg state parliament from 1994 to 1999

Education and profession

Karg completed his compulsory schooling in Bregenz and then learned the trade of tiler at the company A. Kempter in Bregenz. He continued his professional career as a journeyman tiler at the company Knapp
and was then employed part-time at the building society of the savings banks. In addition, he played handball for FC Dornbirn in the top handball league. For four years he played for the handball club Voest Linz, and he also made appearances in the national handball team. Karg continued his education through various courses in the field of real estate and financing and, after his sporting career, worked from 1980 to 1990 as the person responsible for apartment sales at the Rhomberg company in Bregenz. In 1990 he started his own business as a real estate agent.

Policy and functions

Karg joined the Freedom Party in 1990 and was sworn in as a member of the Bregenz City Council on 27 April 1990. From 1990 to 1995 and from 1999 to 2000 he was chairman of the sports committee and from 1999 to 2005 chairman of the harbour and health-social-integration committees. He also served as city councilman for music school, health care and port affairs from June 29, 1999, to May 3, 2005. Karg resigned from the Bregenz City Council on 14 March 2010, having already left the FPÖ in 2005. Karg represented the Freedom Party in the Vorarlberg state parliament from 4 October 1994 to 4 October 1999 and was the area spokesman for sports within the FPÖ state parliamentary club.

Before leaving the party, Karg was the city party chairman of the FPÖ Bregenz from 19 March 1999 to April 2005 and deputy chairman of the FPÖ district party committee from March 1996 to April 2005. He was also a member of the provincial party executive and the provincial party executive of the FPÖ Vorarlberg as well as a member of the FPÖ Bregenz district party executive.


Werner Karg was born as the son of the commercial employee Eugen Karg from Bregenz and his wife Gertrud. He is married and became father of a daughter in 1994 and father of a son in 2001.
