Project Runway is a U.S. casting show focused on fashion design. The show was hosted by Heidi Klum for its first sixteen seasons. With the seventeenth season, Karlie Kloss will take over as host[1].

The participants compete against each other by presenting their clothes, which have to be made according to a given motto and material (e.g. jeans) within a certain time. The designs are presented by models on a catwalk and judged by a jury. Each week, one or more contestants are chosen. In the fourth season, the prizes were an article in Elle, a starting credit of US$100,000 for building up one’s own brand, and a car.

The design themes given vary from designing for a specific person, such as Sasha Cohen, or Miss USA Tara Conner, but there are also specifications such as designing for a fashion brand, such as Banana Republic or Macy’s, or a general theme such as cocktail party. The time limit is usually anywhere from half a day to three days. Once the deadline is reached, contestants must decorate the models and also choose hairstyle and makeup. After the models present their designs, the judges evaluate each design and then interview the designer. Heidi Klum bids farewell to the loser at the end of the show in German with “Auf Wiedersehen”.

1 Michael Kors still appeared as a guest judge on the eleventh, twelfth and fifteenth seasons.
2 Zac Posen previously appeared as a guest judge on the third and fourth seasons.
3 Rachel Roy already appeared as a guest judge in the eighth through tenth seasons.

The show was broadcast by NBC affiliate Bravo Television Network until its fifth season; in 2009, the broadcast rights moved to the Lifetime Television Network for the sixth season in 2009. A lengthy legal battle due to the switch was settled in April after a payment of an undisclosed amount.

In May 2018, it was announced that the show’s licenses would return to the Bravo network with its 17th season. In September 2018, it was confirmed that Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn would not return for another season, as they signed on for a new format on Amazon Video.[2]

The German pay-TV channel The Biography Channel showed the 7th season of the series for the first time on German TV from March 25, 2011. Previously, the channel already aired the 4th, 5th and 6th season under the name “Project Runway – Designer gesucht!”. From March 16, 2010, the 4th season was repeated on the free-TV channel VIVA.

Meanwhile, streaming provider Netflix released the tenth season with German subtitles in German-speaking countries.

The show was nominated for Emmys in reality television broadcast in 2006 and 2007, and in reality television competition in 2009.
