Places of interest
Sugar cane factory
Founded in 1927, the sugar cane factory still produces using the same process as when it was established. A striking feature is the 26 m high tower, whose steam is visible from afar, drawing attention to the sweet production of rum and honey molasses.
Beach and sea water swimming pool
In 2004, the bathing complex ‘Praia da Alagoa’, a beach resort with modern facilities, was opened. The black sand beach is also popular with surfers as a start to the waves. However, bathing there is usually only possible when the sea is calm and the tide is low. There is also a seawater swimming pool, which operates in the tourist season, at one end of the small beach promenade of the village. Since it is located in a pool completely separated from the sea, bathing there is actually always possible during the season. Only in case of high waves, breakers can spill into the pool.
About 1 km northwest of Porto da Cruz is the Eagle Rock, Portuguese Penha de Aguia, a famous mountain of Madeira.
