Pierre Lanfranchi

Pierre Lanfranchi (born 22 April 1959 in Constantine, Algeria) is a French historian, particularly concerned with the history of football.


Lanfranchi was born in what was then still French Algeria; he studied history and art history at the University of Montpellier, at the Institute for European History in Mainz and at the European University Institute in Florence. In 1988 he obtained his doctorate with a thesis on the information policy of the German press during the First World War.

Since 1993, Pierre Lanfranchi has worked as a Research Professor at De Montfort University in Leicester, where he helped set up the courses in Sport, History and Culture and in Management, Law, History and Geography of Sport at the International Centre for Sports History and Culture. He has also been a visiting professor at the University of San Marino since 1996 and has lectured at numerous European universities on the history and economic, social and cultural background of football. Since 2006, he has also been research coordinator at the Centre International d’Étude du Sport in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. Since 2008, he has chaired the World Economic Forum Commission on the Role of Sport in Contemporary Societies.[1]

Since the 1990s, he has also been organising international congresses and symposia on football history topics, and is a scientific advisor to FIFA and the History Committee of the Italian Football Association. He lives in Tuscany.
