Pangkajene and Islands(Indonesian Pangkajene dan Kepulauan or abbreviated Pangkep) is an Indonesian government district (kabupaten) in South Sulawesi province. The capital is Pangkajene. The Pangkajene River of the same name flows through the area. The government district has an area of 898.29 km² and a population of about 250,000 people. The district includes the many small surrounding sperm islands (Kepulauan Spermonde).

Pangkajene was previously a sub-municipality of the Greater Makassar Autonomous Region along with the other sub-municipalities of Makassar, Gowa, Maros, Jeneponto and Takalar. Since 10 February 1960, Pangkajene and Islands has been an independent government district in the province of South Sulawesi.

History

Some of the oldest paintings in human history were discovered in Leang Bulu’ Sipong 4 cave, one of the karst caves in the Maros-Pangkep region, and the hunting scenes of Anoa cattle – an endangered species today – dated to around 40,000 years ago in 2019.[2]
