Luke Pickering began his career as a hockey player with Southern Stampede, for whom he already debuted in 2009 in the New Zealand Ice Hockey League. After finishing runners-up with his hometown team in 2009 and 2011, he moved to the Dunedin Thunder, where he finished third in 2012. He returned to Queenstown in 2016 and became New Zealand champion with the Southern Stampede in the same year.
International
At the junior level, Pickering competed in the 2009 and 2010 Division III and 2011 Division II U18 World Championships and the 2012 Division III U20 World Championships.
He first played for the men’s national team at the 2014 Division II World Cup.
