from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Cyriak Hackhofer (* 14 February 1675 in Wilten, Tyrol; † 9 May 1731 in Vorau, Styria) was an Austrian painter.
He is considered the most important baroque monumental painter of Styria.

Life and work

Hackhofer worked in Vienna from 1704 and was active as court painter for Vorau Abbey and its parishes from 1708 until his death. He was probably influenced in Tyrol by Egid Schor, Kaspar Waldmann as well as Josef Waldmann and in Vienna by Johann Michael Rottmayr.

Hackhofer painted frescoes in Vorau Abbey (chapter house, sacristy), in the market church of Vorau, in Festenburg Castle, in St. Catherine’s Church and in six chapels (Loreto Chapel, Thorn Coronation Chapel, Nativity Chapel, Olivet Chapel, Flagellation Chapel and Cross Chapel). In addition, he created the high altarpiece in the parish church of Hartberg.
Still preserved today are altarpieces in the churches of Grafendorf bei Hartberg, Sankt Johann bei Herberstein, Sankt Ilgen bei Lafnitz, Sankt Lorenzen am Wechsel, Mönichwald, Peggau, Pinggau, Pöllau, Strallegg, Stubenberg and Wenigzell
