Ivo Canelas (born 23 December 1973 in Lisbon) is a Portuguese actor.

Life

Born in Lisbon on December 23, 1973, at the age of three he went with his parents to Texas, where they wrote their doctoral theses. After about six months, he returned to Portugal for health reasons, where he lived with his grandparents until his parents also returned after a year.[1] After finishing school, he went to the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute, in New York, as a scholarship holder of the Gulbenkian Foundation, where he lived for four years.[2] Back in Lisbon, he first acted in theatre, including in Jorge Silva Melo’s 1999 production of Bertolt Brecht’s A Queda do Egoísta Johan Fatzer ( orig.: Downfall of the Egoist Johann Fatzer). He has also appeared on stage in productions by Solveig Nordlund, Diogo Dória, José Wallenstein and others. In the 1990s, Canelas began acting in television series. He became known to a broad television audience in particular with the series O Fura-Vidas (roughly: “The Life-Planning Destroyer”).[3]

After starring with a supporting role in Patrice Chéreau’s 1994 film The Night of St. Bartholomew, Canelas began to work as a film actor as well, appearing more frequently in feature productions of Portuguese film and television, particularly since 2000.[4][5]

Canelas won several film awards, including the Globo de Ouro in 2009 (for Arte de Roubar, by Leonel Vieira), having already been nominated for the award in 2008, for Call Girl by António-Pedro Vasconcelos, and for O Mistério da Estrada de Sintra by Jorge Paixão da Costa.[6] In 2010, Canelas was awarded Best Actor at the Portuguese Film Festival, Caminhos do Cinema Português in Coimbra, for his role in Desavergonhadamente Real (Eng: Shamelessly Real, directed by Artur Serra Araújo).[7] In 2009, he was nominated at the Monaco Television Festival for his role in the television series Liberdade 21.[8] In 2012 he was also awarded a Globo de Ouro as a theatre actor.[9]

Ivo Canelas is now considered one of the most important actors of his generation in Portugal,[10] who has acted in international productions with Portuguese participation,[11] as well as becoming known with leading roles in successful films in Portuguese cinema, such as Vicente Alves do Ó’s 2012 hit film Florbela, in which Canelas plays Florbela Espanca’s brother.[12] As a result, he has since become a prominent actor in Portugal, attracting the attention of the tabloid press as well.[13]
