Homosexuality in the Maldives is criminalized by the legal system, homosexual acts are punishable.

Legal situation

In the Maldives, homosexual acts are punishable by law. Section 411(2) of the Maldives Penal Code prohibits sexual intercourse between people of the same sex.[1] Homosexual sexual intercourse can be punished by imprisonment from six months to four years.[2] Paragraph 6d of Section 411 allows an additional punishment of 100 lashes in addition to imprisonment, which is justified on the basis of Sharia law.[3]

Social situation

Due to illegality, there are no LGBT communities in the Maldives.
