Ferdinand Barnstein

Ferdinand Barnstein (born 31 July 1861 in Gebesee; † 18 July 1947 ibid[1]) was a German physiological chemist.

Life

Barnstein passed his Abitur at the Königliches Realgymnasium in Erfurt at Easter 1882.[2] He studied chemistry and received his doctorate in 1887 from the Vereinigte Friedrichs-Universität Halle-Wittenberg with the thesis Die Isobutenyltricarbonsäure und ihr Zersetzungproduct, die a-Dimethylbernsteinsäure.[3][4] From January 1892 he worked at the Saxon Agricultural Research Station in Möckern under Gustav Kühn. Here he later served as head of the feed department and held the title of professor.[5] He developed a method for determining the pure protein content,[6] which is still used today.[7]
