EC Panthers Frohnleiten is an ice hockey club in the municipality of Frohnleiten in Styria. In 1992 the ice hockey club Black Panthers Frohnleiten was founded and in 1998 the club registered with the ÖEHV and StEHV as a regular club. Since the 2014/2015 season, the club plays in the Styrian Elite League, the third highest ice hockey league in Austria. Since the beginning of the 2015/2016 season, there is a new board and for the current 2016/2017 season, the club was further strengthened by many new players. The club made it into the play-off in the 2016/17 season.

History

The Ungersdorfer Murkanadier and the Laufnitzdorfer Murgeiger were the two original cells of Frohnleiten ice hockey since the end of the 50s. These two clubs joined forces and a unified team was born. The squad at that time included over 20 players, including Baron Franz Mayer-Melnhof. A Frohnleiten legionnaire by the name of Manfred Koller was already playing for GSV (Grazer Sportverein) at the time and a second was soon to follow him: Wolfgang Graf at ATSE.

The club moved to the natural ice rink in Schönau, a district of Frohnleiten. At this time, the club ventured into the Styrian regional league. The following teams belonged to this league: Kapfenberg SV, Weiz, Bruck/Mur, Mariazell, Eisenerz, Zeltweg and Frohnleiten.
After the Landesliga time the SEC (Schönauer Eishockeyclub) and the Stammtisch Weissenbach merged to a Wilder Verein until the “EC Frohnleiten Black Panthers” was registered as a regular club on April 10, 1992. (Joining the ÖEHV and StEHV in 1998). Since the completion of the ice rink in Frohnleiten, the club is located here.

The management of the club managed, through the excellent work and professional management, the high flight of the Panthers in the provincial league and the promotion to the Styrian Elite League. From the season 2008/09 the club called itself “EC Dylan Panthers Austria”. By the entrance of the main sponsor Dylan Austria GmbH, with the head office in the Netherlands, a name change was connected. After the departure of the main sponsor, the club is called “EC Panthers Frohnleiten” since the 2012/13 season.

From the 2015/16 season Karl Edler took over as chairman with Gerhard Hain as vice. President of the club is Richard Austin.[2]

Combat team

Since the 2014/15 season, the club again plays in the Styrian Elite League under coach Bernd Jäger. In this season five teams participated in the league. In addition to Frohnleiten also: EV Zeltweg 2010, EC ATSE Graz, EC Bulls Weiz and Kings Leoben. In 16 games the Panthers could win three games, one of them in overtime. The team from Frohnleiten had to admit defeat to Weiz by one point and could not enter the play-off.[3]

After in the 2015/16 season the team EC Rattlesnakes moved from the Styrian Landesliga to the Eliteliga the league now counts six teams. In 20 games the Panthers from Frohnleiten could get one win and twice points from overtime. At the end of the season, however, the team has only five points and is clearly at the bottom of the table.[4][5]

The goal of the year was to reach the play-offs, this was due to the many high-quality new players also a realistic goal, which they eventually achieved. Another club joined the elite league, the Kapfenberger Sportverein: Section Eishockey (KSV).[6] The club played the previous season one league higher in the Alps Hockey League.

For the first time the club could qualify for the qualifying round of the Styrian Elite League. The opponent in the semi-final is KSV. Kapfenberg was the house-high favorite in this duel. The series ended 3-1 for Kapfenberg. Frohnleiten remained the only team that could beat KSV in the regular season.

In the elite league there is a new club with the Graz 99ers Juniors. However, the LE Kings will not participate in league play this season. The Panthers have the opening game on 23 September 2017 in the ice rink Liebenau against the Graz 99ers Juniors.

Young talent

For several years now, there has been a completely new coaching team in the junior area. Jürgen Bedits acts as head coach, he is assisted by Philipp Hanschel, Christopher Egger, Manuel Laritz, as well as Mario Lechner as goalie coach. In addition to ice hockey training, the club also runs a skating school for children of all ages. The youngsters often play in Styrian tournaments, such as the Bambini Cup at the Liebenau Ice Arena in Graz. Since the 2016/17 season, the junior team has been playing in the Styrian U11 league. The U11 team of the Frohnleiten Panthers became Styrian national champions in a joint game with NHL Graz in the 2016/17 season. The team won eight out of nine games.[7]

Since the 2010/11 season Bernd Jäger is the Head Coach of the Frohnleiten Panthers. Jäger played from 2000 to 2006 in the EBEL with the Grazer 99ers, the Vienna Capitals and the Black-Wings Linz. In the 2003/04 season he won the Austrian championship title with the Vienna Capitals.
